About the Course

YMCA Awards Level 2 Gym Instructor


This qualification aims to develop your knowledge and skills so you can engage, facilitate, educate and support clients in a fitness setting. On successful completion you will be able to work competently as a fitness instructor, planning and delivering fitness sessions.



Entry Requirements

There are no formal prerequisites to enrol on this qualification, other than experience participating in fitness activities, using a gym, good communication skills, and ability to use a computer including the internet.



Payment Plan

To make your qualification more affordable, we offer a payment plan where you pay a non-refundable £125 deposit and choose to repay the balance, interest-free over 3, 6, 9 or 12 months.



Qualification Structure

To complete this qualification, you must successfully complete one mandatory unit.


Unit 1 - Anatomy & Physiology for Exercise and Fitness Instructors - assessed via an online multiple-choice theory exam, online assessment workbook,


Unit 2 - Providing a Positive Customer Experience in the Exercise Environment - assessed via completion of an online assessment workbook and observation (video submission)


Unit 3 - Lifestyle Management and Health Awareness - assessed via completion of an online assessment workbook


Unit 4 - Gym-Based Programme Planning and Preparation - assessed via completion of a gym programme session plan, observation (video submission), case study and worksheet questions


Unit 5 - Gym-Based Programme Delivery and Professional Instruction - assessed via completion of two observation (video submission)

    • When a referral to another professional is necessary

    • Importance of healthy eating including the national food model/guide, key healthy eating advice, importance of hydration, professional boundaries, the energy balance equation and the health risks of poor nutrition

    • How to support clients to adhere to exercise and physical activity including identifying typical barriers to exercise, behaviour change approaches/strategies, and setting short, medium and long term SMART goals.


  • Gym-based programme planning, preparation and delivery of sessions

    • Adapting communication techniques when dealing with different clients needs

    • Setting SMART goals with client information

    • Planning a gym-based session including cardiovascular methods, resistance training, functional exercise, flexibility and motor skills

    • Introducing individuals and groups to a gym environment
